The family of Makayla Mendez made their case Tuesday directly to Police Chief Delrish Moss.
It’s been nearly a month since Mendez was shot and killed during a reported robbery at an apartment complex in Miramar. The family insists Makayla’s boyfriend is the suspect.
“We need justice for my baby, we as a family need answers,” Mendez’s mom, Karolyn Taylor, said. “It’s a waiting game.”

Police said the other man involved has cooperated, and they’ve had multiple conversations with him, but have not made an arrest or identified a suspect.
“The mother and I have been talking,” Moss said. “What I’m telling her is these processes are slow, they’re methodical, we’re working with the State Attorney’s office, but at the end of the day, we’re going to figure out everything that happened in this case.”
Miramar Police also asked the family for patience as they work their way through the investigation.
