A woman was killed after she was attacked by an alligator while swimming in a Florida river, authorities said.

The incident happened Sunday on the Econlockhatchee River near the Barr Street Trailhead in the Little Big Econ State Forest, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said.
FWC officers and Seminole County Sheriff’s deputies responded after the woman was apparently bitten by an alligator while swimming in the river, officials said.
She suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. Her identity hasn’t been released.

A contracted nuisance alligator trapper responded and trapping efforts were ongoing, officials said.
“The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time,” the agency said in a statement.
FWC officials said serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida.
