According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the 14-year-old was identified as Marcus L. Sanders.

Deputies said that on Saturday, just after 7 p.m., Florida City Police arrived at a man-made lake at 33600 N. Redland Road after receiving reports of a near-drowning.

When officers and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, crews pulled Sanders out of the water, and he was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

After an hour of the first incident, deputies said officers went back to the same location after another near-drowning was reported.

Another 14-year-old boy was then airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

His identity was not released, but he remains in critical condition.

NBC6 spoke to a neighbor who saw the aftermath and believes the teens may have been fishing.

I saw his stomach was swollen,” Jim Brown said. “I guess the water got inside him. I seen them working on him doing CPR.”

He said he saw one of the victims being carried out on a stretcher and also saw fishing poles at the lake.

“I seen a fishing pole and I saw the wire that you actually throw in the water, that’s why I figured they were fishing,” Brown said. “It could be anybody’s child. It’s sad.”

NBC6 has reached out to Miami-Dade County Public Schools to confirm if the teens went to their schools.
