A man accused of torturing his girlfriend’s dog and assaulting her in Miami-Dade County was arrested on Tuesday, authorities said.

Kevin Monasterio, 24, is facing several charges, including domestic battery and animal cruelty.
According to authorities, Monasterio and his girlfriend have been together for about a year and live together.
An arrest report said that on July 11, there was a verbal altercation between the two about the victim’s dog, and Monasterio got upset and punched the dog in the face. He then picked up the dog and threw it against the wall.
The victim then took the dog and put it in its crate, but Monasterio went up to his girlfriend and started to punch her body, and then he squeezed her neck with his hands, the report said. Monasterio then put his girlfriend on the ground and continued to choke her and slammed her body on the ground.
After that incident, the report said, Monasterio grabbed the dog crate with the dog inside, threw it outside, grabbed a hose and “waterboarded” the dog by spraying water on its face. After he stopped, Monasterio went to his vehicle.

Following that incident, the next morning, there was another altercation between Monasterio and his girlfriend after she woke up and started to yell and hit the dog, the report said. He also started hitting his girlfriend and began to strangle her again.
Monasterio then let her go and left the home to get coffee, but told the victim that if she left the home, he would kill her and the dog, the report said.
Once he left, the report said, the girlfriend went to her family’s home and called the police.
Weeks after the incident, Monasterio was found, and he was taken into custody.
Once in custody, Monasterio denied all the allegations against him, and he was taken to the Turner Guilford Night Correctional Center.
