World War II Navy veteran Julius Woods is still working as a South Florida security guard as he approaches age 100.

On Saturday – as Woods’ birthday and retirement date neared – he was honored by the community.
Dozens of residents, family members and friends came out to celebrate his 100th birthday and retirement – which are both in August.
Captain Woods is the chief security guard at the entrance to Belle Meade Island in Miami and has been at his post for more than 25 years.
Island residents dedicated a plaque on the guardhouse in his honor. It reads: “A legacy of service and inspiration. Thank you for your leadership and light.”

Commissioner Christine King presented Woods with a centennial salute from the City of Miami.
Neighbors also contributed $100 each and the money added up. Woods was presented with a $5,000 check.
“I can’t say enough that I served y’all and I hope that you were satisfied. I will always miss you. And if I live to be 200, you’ll be in my heart always,” Woods said.
