The Sunny Isles Beach Commission on Tuesday approved an ordinance to strengthen e-bike safety regulations by adding an age restriction.

The city describes an e-bike as a bicycle or tricycle that has fully operable pedals, a seat or saddle, can reach maximum speeds of 28 miles per hour, and has an electric motor of less than 750 watts.
As part of the new regulations, the city will now have an age restriction of 16 years or older to ride an e-bike.
The city is also requiring people who are 16 or older to carry a government-issued ID when they ride an e-bike.

Riders will not be able to operate their e-bikes on sidewalks within the city.
First offenders who do not follow these regulations will pay a $250 fine, which increases to $500 for future violations.
Officials said citations will start being issued on Aug. 16 after an educational campaign.
Earlier this year, Sunny Isles Beach approved an age restriction for motorized scooter use.
