A South Florida mom is speaking out about suing three Miami Police officers and the city over a year after her daughter was killed in a shooting in Wynwood.

Evelyn Valdes was supposed to be celebrating her 28th birthday but ended up killed in a police-involved shooting on June 14, 2025.
According to investigators, police encountered a man with a gun outside a nightclub near 23rd Street and Northwest 1st Court and several officers eventually started firing, killing the man.
A bullet also struck Valdes, an innocent bystander who was sitting in an SUV nearby, who died from her injuries.
Surveillance video obtained by NBC6 appears to show a fight breaking out outside the Electric Lady nightclub. The footage also appears to show two Miami police officers noticing the altercation before opening fire on an armed man.
“Somebody needs to be held accountable, I’m tired of waiting,” mother Kristy Garcia told NBC6.

She said it feels like she lost her daughter yesterday.
“The guy didn’t even have the gun pointed at anybody, he wasn’t brandishing it, there was other ways they could’ve handled that situation,” she said. “My daughter didn’t need to die that night, but they were so negligent like, were they not trained, I just don’t understand how they’re going to get away with this.”
Garcia is suing the officers who opened fire, the City of Miami, the nightclub Electric Lady, and the security company working that night.
The lawsuit alleges excessive force, wrongful death and negligence.
“I’m going to get justice for her, I have to get justice for her,” Garcia said.
Two other people were shot but recovered from their injuries.
According to the lawsuit, two officers fired their weapons and shot 10 or 11 rounds total.
Two of the three officers named in the lawsuit returned to full duty two weeks later. The third officer was administratively re-assigned to the real time crime center.
