The incident unfolded Thursday in Ruskin after a woman told Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office officials that her ex-boyfriend had held her captive at gunpoint overnight.
Deputies responded to the apartment complex of the suspect, 34-year-old Christopher Dmuchowski, where a deputy with a drone saw him going to a van in the parking lot, officials said.
Moments later, as deputies moved in, Dmuchowski opened fire, shooting deputies Sopharmony Muon and Colton Daniels, authorities said.
“I’m hit, I’m hit! I’m in my car, I got hit in the neck!” one deputy yells into his radio after being shot inside his cruiser.
A sergeant who arrived at the scene during the gunfire shot Dmuchowski, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The footage shows the sergeant firing multiple shots at Dmuchowski, who hits the ground after he’s struck. It also shows one of the deputies covered in blood and receiving attention after he was shot.
One deputy was shot in the face and the other was shot in the neck, and both were hospitalized, officials said.
“The hand of God was with our deputies here today,” Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
In a Facebook post Friday, Chronister said Daniels was expected to be released while Muon was scheduled for surgery.
