Forty-year-old Albert Sistrunk accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 20 years in state prison followed by 10 years of probation.

Investigators say the victim, 57-year-old Christopher Jones, was riding his bicycle along Southwest 37th Avenue when Sistrunk pulled up in an SUV.

Surveillance video captured Sistrunk pistol-whipping Jones before firing a gun. Jones collapsed almost immediately after being struck.

The video also shows at least two people walking or riding by the victim’s body without stopping to help. It wasn’t until a third passerby arrived that a crowd began gathering around Jones. Police arrived shortly afterward.

Authorities say Sistrunk fled the scene, but the SUV he was allegedly driving was later found parked on the grass in front of a home on Southwest 299th Street.

Court records state that Sistrunk was wearing clothing similar to what appeared in the surveillance footage, and investigators found blood stains on those clothes.

Jones was a well-known figure in Coconut Grove. During Monday’s hearing, members of his family told Sistrunk they forgave him, but they also asked why he had to shoot.

Sistrunk did not want to speak during sentencing.

The family said Jones leaves behind a son, a police officer, who is grieving the loss of his father.
