According to an arrest report, there were several people at the home, which NBC6 has learned is an Airbnb, and alcohol and an argument led to the violent night.
Samantha Bean said her 21-year-old son, Gage Rankin-Bean, was just trying to help another woman.
“Nobody deserves it and definitely not a kindhearted, loving person like him,” Bean said. “Definitely traumatizing and a nightmare.”
Bean said her son underwent his third surgery on Wednesday and is currently on a ventilator.
Police arrested Daeshone Codner after they said he stabbed Rankin-Bean at the home on Southwest 15th Avenue in Little Havana earlier in the week.
Police said the violent night started on the back patio. A woman who was living at the house told detectives she got into an argument with Codner, the report said. The woman threw her beer at Codner, then Codner threw bottles and cans at her, hitting her in the face.

Police said that’s when Rankin-Bean tried to intervene.
“That’s Gage,” Bean said. “I mean, if you needed him and you’re in distress, he’ll do what he can to help, and unfortunately, in this day and age, it’s not always OK to do that.”
Codner walked away and came back with something in his hand, the report said. Police said they watched surveillance video showing Codner stab the 21-year-old.
Bean, who lives in Michigan, flew down to Miami after getting the news.
“Scared, nervous, hurt, upset, mad, but just hoping and praying that he’ll be OK,” Bean said.
Bean said her focus now is on her oldest son, but she wants justice.
“That’s really in God’s hands to take that from here,” Bean said. “He’ll pull through, but it’s going to be a long recovery physically, mentally, emotionally, financially.”
NBC6 reached out to Airbnb for a statement.
Codner was in court Wednesday. He will stay in jail and see another judge Thursday.
