Miami Beach has implemented a new program to cut down on the towing of resident vehicles.

Under the program that began July 1, residents registered with the Miami Beach Parking Department will now get up to three parking citations and then a courtesy text message each calendar quarter before their car is towed on the fourth violation.
The End Resident Tows reform does have some exceptions. If residents don’t move their vehicle 24 hours after receiving the citation and public safety hazards, their car is subject to being towed. This also comes after a 15-minute courtesy text.
The City of Miami Beach also highlighted how immediate towing will still occur with serious public safety hazards like parking in front of a fire hydrant, disabled spaces, obstructed driveways, blocked sidewalks, blocked bike lanes, emergency access areas and freight loading zones. These serious violations will also receive a courtesy text.

This reform was approved unanimously by the Miami Beach City Commission, according to their press release.
“We will protect our residents from unnecessary towing,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner in the press release.
