The 32-year-old reportedly has verbally agreed to join Paraguayan side Club Olimpia following New Zealand’s run in the tournament. Journalist Fabrizio Romano and The Associated Press reported on the negotiations with the deal not yet confirmed by the team.

Payne currently plays for Wellington Phoenix of the A-League, which combines top teams from Australia and New Zealand. Wellington finished eighth this season, with Payne being a member since 2019.

Payne’s follower count grew thanks to Argentine influencer El Scarso, who identified him as the least-followed player at the World Cup. He then requested fans to follow Payne to make him famous.

Typically a right-back, Payne has been used in multiple positions before. He doesn’t offer speed but is a gritty defender who can support with crosses in attack.
