A man was killed in Pembroke Park on Sunday after he was shot and crashed his car, deputies said.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Pembroke Park Police received reports of a crash that happened near the 3900 block of West Hallandale Beach Boulevard.

At the scene, officers spoke to a witness who said the victim, identified as 32-year-old Daniel Mathis, was involved in a verbal altercation with someone at the Orion Gas station.

Deputies said the verbal altercation then escalated, and Mathis was shot.

As he attempted to flee the area in his Dodge Challenger, Mathis tried to go into traffic, drove northbound over the center median, which caused an SUV to collide with his vehicle.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue then arrived at the scene and took Mathis to the hospital, where he died.

An investigation into the incident remains active.
