According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Friday at around 6 p.m. with a report of a man armed with a knife in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard.

Investigators said 31-year-old Kevin Dominick Almonte was armed and had been threatening residents before going into an apartment unit and also made threats about having guns, propane tanks and bombs inside the unit.

Cellphone video shows a large law enforcement response, including SWAT teams with guns drawn, standing at a doorway.

“There were hours of communication between deputies and the suspect,” BSO Public Information Officer Miranda Grossman.

At some point during the standoff, Almonte advanced toward deputies while he was armed with a knife, and that’s when a deputy fired, BSO said.

Almonte was then taken to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

BSO said the deputy who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
