Feud between Broward sheriff and mayor over spending continues

A public feud between the Broward Sheriff and county commissioners continued over the weekend on social media.

The back and forth has been going on for months over money and how Sheriff Gregory Tony is spending it.

In a series of videos posted on social media, Sheriff Gregory Tony said, “Their actions risk compromising the due-process protections to which they are entitled. The statewide investigation is not a political tactic by the Sheriff. It is a serious matter that demands respect and caution.”

Commissioners have called into question a training facility that they said would cost over $40 million more to build than originally planned.

County Mayor Mark Bogan said county commissioners are directing the county auditors to investigate how Sheriff Tony is spending $870 million.

Tony, on the other hand, is pointing to a state probe of commissioners, and insists he is working to protect an active criminal investigation.

Mayor Bogan plans to visit the BSO headquarters on Monday, but Tony said the visit is unauthorized and won’t let him in.

Today’s forecast

Temps in the upper 70s to low 80s this morning have been around the area.

Mainly rain free conditions have kicked off Monday.

There have been a few showers across US-1 in The Keys and a few showers around Miami Beach but mainly off the coast.

There could be a few stray showers later this afternoon into the early evening hours as a weak front continue to clear South Florida. It’s not going to drastically drop our temps but it will briefly lower the humidity and take temps to where they should be for this time of year, near 88.

Overnight, a few showers mainly near The Keys are anticipated. Temps fall into the mid 70s and with the lower humidity, this will feel nice to kick off the day. It’ll turn breezy as the front clears the area. The drop in humidity is short lived because the front stalls and starts to lift back to the north returning the humidity and the chance for rain for the second half of the week. The chances for rain linger into the weekend.

Also, the radar is noisy this morning but it’s not from rain, its migrating birds that are taking advantage of the tailwind from the cold front! Neat!

Columbus Day: A 20% of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 4pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 103. Northeast breeze 5 to 9 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 88. Northeast wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Wednesday: Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunny, with a high near 88. Northeast wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thursday: A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorm. Sunny, with a high near 89. East wind 7 to 10 mph.

Fugitive businessman taken into US custody in Venezuela bribery case

A businessman wanted for years in the U.S. for allegedly paying bribes to top Venezuelan officials in exchange for lucrative state contracts in Venezuela has been taken into custody.

Alvaro Pulido was indicted in Miami federal court in 2019 and again in 2021 as part of an investigation into his longtime business partner, Alex Saab, a one-time ally of ousted President Nicolás Maduro. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the State Department had been offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest.

Pulido, 62, was taken into U.S. custody after an investigation led by the DEA, FBI and Homeland Security Investigations agencies, American officials said Sunday.

It’s unclear how Pulido ended up in U.S. custody. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday in Miami.

“His alleged actions show a blatant disregard to the Venezuelan people by corrupting government programs intended to provide critical food, medicine, and housing for personal enrichment and exploiting the American financial system to do it,” Attorney General Todd Blanche wrote in a social media post Sunday.

“No amount of time or distance will stop” the Justice Department “from working with our federal law enforcement and international partners to pursue these criminals and bring them to justice in an American courtroom,” he wrote.

Venezuelan authorities have so far been silent about the arrest, reflecting the challenge acting President Delcy Rodríguez faces in appeasing elements of the ruling coalition that want her to resist attempts by the Trump administration to round up scores of Venezuelan insiders wanted by the U.S., sometimes for years, for serious crimes ranging from corruption to drug trafficking.

The Colombian-born Pulido was arrested in Venezuela in 2023 as part of a sprawling crackdown on corruption inside state-run oil company PDVSA that was led by Rodríguez while she was serving as Maduro’s vice president. She took over as Venezuela’s acting president following the U.S. military’s ouster of Maduro in January.

Prosecutors allege that Pulido, together with Saab, created a network of offshore shell companies to funnel bribes to top Maduro allies in exchange for more than $2 billion in contracts to import food, medicine and low-cost housing at a time of widespread hardship in the South American country.

Prior to these alleged offenses, Pulido had a prolific history of drug trafficking, including a 1997 conviction in Italy under the alias of German Enrique Rubio, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said in a statement.

Saab, who also hails from Colombia, was deported to the U.S. by Rodríguez in May. Last month, he pleaded guilty in a related bribery case, agreeing to cooperate against Maduro and other individuals and forfeit $195 million in criminal proceeds from the corruption scheme.

Family of woman allegedly killed by son in Tamarac want answers

The family of a woman who was allegedly fatally stabbed by her son in Tamarac is pleading for answers.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies on Friday arrived near the 5300 block of Northwest 28th Avenue after receiving reports of a stabbing.

At the scene, deputies found a woman who was suffering from stab wounds, and she was pronounced dead.

She was identified as 57-year-old Ylda Cabello-Ynocente.

Her son, 28-year-old Manuel Farfan-Cabello, was found and charged with first-degree murder.

NBC6 on Saturday spoke exclusively to family members.

They said that Farfan-Cabello had battled severe mental illness for years, and described Cabello-Ynocente as a devoted mother and a kind, hard-working woman whose faith and family meant everything to her.

Her ex-husband, Oscar Montero, is still struggling to process her loss.

“It’s very hard to explain to you about how hard this is,” Montero said.

For the family, that grief is complicated by concerns about Farfan-Cabello’s mental health.

Cabello-Ynocente’s sister-in-law, Rocio, rushed to South Florida from Peru after learning about the tragedy.

She told NBC6 that her nephew is schizophrenic and has undergone treatment for the condition, but said he often struggles with hallucinations.

Rocio said her nephew isn’t a bad person and hopes he gets the help he needs.

As detectives continue their investigation into what led to Cabello-Ynocente’s death, the family is left with more questions than answers.

Rocio said she is now looking to return Cabello-Ynocente’s body to Peru, where much of their family lives.

The incident captured the attention of the consul general and deputy of Peru in Miami, who are steeping in to help.

They said they’ve contacted the family, and are going to help them to send Cabello-Ynocente’s remains back to Peru.
