More than 20 inches of rain has fallen at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport so far this month, making September 2026 the wettest September on record for Fort Lauderdale, according to preliminary data. The previous record was 18.40 inches, set in 1998.

To put that into perspective, Fort Lauderdale typically picks up about 8.61 inches of rain during the entire month of September. We’ve already received more than twice that amount and there is still a full week left to go.

So, what’s behind all the rain?

Disturbance after disturbance helped pull deep tropical moisture into South Florida, fueling frequent downpours and thunderstorms. Much of the heaviest rain recently has focused across Broward and northern Miami-Dade, with some locations picking up more than 9 inches in just a few days.

And the timing is especially notable. Fort Lauderdale entered September coming off of an exceptionally dry summer. Now, just weeks later, we’re talking about the wettest September in the city’s recorded history.

There are still several days left in the month, meaning that record could continue to climb.

If you are tired of the rain, good news! Drier air is expected to move into the region over the weekend, and rainy season is winding down and wraps up Oct. 15.
