Over in Hollywood, people were forced to walk through floodwater along the Hollywood Broadwalk on Sunday.

Video from Only in Dade also showed the King Tides, which are exceptionally high tides that usually last about three hours.

NBC6 on Sunday spoke with beachgoers, who said the King Tide hasn’t affected their experience.

“It’s crazy,” said a person. “When we were driving down the highway here, we had to go through like giant puddles.”

One business owner told NBC6 that in the 45 years he’s been in South Florida, he’s never seen anything like this.

“I usually tell the people we’re 17 steps away from the from the sand,” he said. “But now, actually, we’re on the beach, now we’re in the water.”

His hotel was not impacted by the flood waters because it’s built on an elevated structure.

When asked if he expected any help from the city, he said this is something out of everyone’s control.

“I don’t know where they would wipe the water,” he said It’s a natural thing.” “We’ve had three hurricanes in one week, and we never have this water.”

However, just doors away, a store clerk said that although they saw the high tides coming, he had to close the store for two hours on Saturday night because the water was going into the store.

He’s calling on the city to install bigger barriers to help control the flooding.

He also left sandbags lined up in front of the store doors overnight in hopes of avoiding more problems.

And just a few feet past the beach and into the residential area, residents were frustrated.

“Horrible,” Magda Montiel Davis said. “I can’t. I ordered boots, and I made them combat rain, combat boots, so I could step outside. I can’t go outside.”

Davis has been living in her 1933 home since 2021, which she refers to as her doll house.

She told NBC6 that she never imagined her fairy tale would include this.

“I’m at the end of my rope,” she said. “I just replace my wooden floors because of the flooding underneath. That comes up less than a year ago, and now, it’s damaged again. “

She’s now calling on the city to do something about the flooding and said this is the worst she’s ever seen it.

“It’s not all Mother Nature,” she said. It’s not an act of God. It is negligence and misfeasance and nonfeasance by the city and the county.”

Video shows waves crashing into her front porch as cars drove by, with floodwater at least knee deep.

Davis describes it as a mini tsunami.

“I have done everything,” she said. “I’ve gone in person. I have made appointments, been able to speak to no one. I don’t know what else to do.”

Here’s what you know to know about King Tides

King Tides are expected in South Florida now through Thursday, Oct. 1, because of the full moon.

Elevated water levels from high tide can flood low-lying areas and leave standing water without any rain.

It’s common to get in on these cycles in the fall as the Earth is closest to the moon in the elliptical lunar orbit, which exacerbates the high water.

The highest high tides come with the full and new moon.

The elevated water table not only impacts the beaches but also inland locations.

The ground is made of limestone, which is very porous, so water can come up through the ground as the water table rises, which flood streets.

With sea level rise, these elevated high tides have become more problematic over the last decade.

Dates of the next King Tide cycles:

  • October 7-13 (Peak)
  •  October 24-31 (Peak)
  • November 5-11
  • November 22-28
  • December 24-25

Water levels get increasingly lower as we move further away from the peak times.

The City of Hollywood told NBC6 that Public Works crews are deploying additional tiger dams along the Broadwalk, and barricades have been placed on low-lying streets to keep vehicles from driving through floodwater.

For residents looking to protect their cars, the city said Hollywood Beach parking garages are opening free of charge to residents through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, with proof of residency required.
