On Thursday, the family of 17-year-old Yahkeim Lollar gathered at the Ziff Opera House as Miami Northwestern Senior High School honored him with a posthumous diploma during the school’s graduation ceremony.
White caps and gowns, smiling graduates and proud families filled the venue as students celebrated the next chapter of their lives. For the Lollar family, however, the ceremony served as both a moment of pride and remembrance. A portrait of Yahkeim was displayed during the event, helping keep his memory alive among classmates, teachers, and loved ones.
During the ceremony, school officials presented a diploma plaque “on behalf of our fallen Bull,” referring to the school’s mascot.
“I was just fantasizing him walking across that stage and being happy and me screaming his name,” said his mother, Nathalie Jean. “So I tried to just look at the positive.”
Lollar was killed in December 2024 after investigators said his girlfriend, Jahara Malik, stabbed him in the heart during an argument.
Earlier this month, Malik was sentenced to 17 years in prison after taking responsibility for the case.

Despite the devastating loss, Yahkeim’s parents said they remain determined to celebrate their son’s accomplishments and the life he lived.
“Kind of getting used to having these moments nowadays,” said his father, Darveed Lollar. “I love them, though. It keeps him alive.”
The emotional ceremony marked what would have been a milestone moment for the teenager, who, his family said, was proud to attend Miami Northwestern Senior High School.
“It was a proud day for myself,” his father added. “This meant a lot for my son. He really wanted to be a graduate of Miami Northwestern, and we are here to accept this. I am so happy right now.”
The family also shared a message for other parents, encouraging them to have open conversations with their children about unhealthy or toxic relationships.
According to jail records, Malik remains at the county jail but is expected to be transferred to a state prison facility in the near future.
