Florida Highway Patrol officials confirmed on Thursday that the 9-month-old girl and 73-year-old man from Cape Coral died after they had been injured in the May 10 crash.

Parents Felipe Guzman and Mónica Villarreal had previously identified the girl as Nina Guzman.

Villarreal said it was her first Mother’s Day and that her mother and aunt had flown in from Ecuador to help her with the baby because Villarreal had recently undergone surgery for thyroid cancer.

The mother and aunt, ages 58 and 60, were also killed in the crash.

FHP officials said a driver had traveled to the area to assist a family member whose vehicle had become disabled and was on the wrong side of the roadway when the crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-75 in Weston.

A total of five vehicles were involved in the crash, which caused all lanes of the highway to be shut down.

The baby had been airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition, and multiple other drivers were injured.

The driver who FHP said was assisting a family member, identified as 60-year-old Cira Quinones Lewis, was also hospitalized but is now facing charges including careless driving and driving with a suspended license.

Lewis, who authorities said was in the country illegally from Cuba, remains behind bars on an immigration hold.
