An investigation is underway after a shooting involving an off-duty officer that happened on South Beach in the overnight hours, Miami Beach police said.

Authorities said it happened at around 1:12 a.m. at South Pointe Park at 1 Washington Avenue.
Police said preliminary information indicates that an off-duty law enforcement officer of an unspecified agency was “involved in an incident during which a firearm was discharged and a subject was struck.”
The subject was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

The names of those involved were not immediately revealed, nor was a possible motive for the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is standard practice in law enforcement shootings.
