Manny Fernandez, a Miami Dolphins legend who won two Super Bowls while leading the famed No-Name Defense, has died, the team announced Tuesday.

He was 79.

Fernandez was a member of the Dolphins’ team that still owns the only perfect season in NFL history and was a member of the team’s Ring of Honor.

“His consistent and selfless contributions on the field were instrumental to the Dolphins success throughout the early 1970s, particularly in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, in which he produced some of the most memorable defensive performances in the history of the game,” the Dolphins wrote on Instagram Tuesday. “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and teammates as we remember one of the best players in Dolphins history.”

Fernandez, originally from Oakland, California, was signed by the Dolphins after going undrafted out of Utah.

In eight seasons with Miami, from 1968 to 1975, he had 35 sacks and was twice named a 2nd team All-Pro.
