Allen Matis, 68, pleaded guilty four months after the crash that killed Henry Bezy, who was sleeping inside his home when the vehicle slammed through the living room.
According to the victim’s family, Bezy’s sister, Claire Bezy, was also inside the home and survived the crash.
“Vibrant person, always available to talk to. Now there is a void taking his place, and nothing will ever change that. Nothing will bring him back,” Claire Bezy said.
Investigators’ body camera footage captured Matis shortly after the crash, appearing confused as officers responded to the scene.
During his court appearance, Matis expressed remorse for Bezy’s death and acknowledged the lasting impact on the victim’s loved ones.
“Henry’s death is a cross I am going to carry for the rest of my life,” Matis said. He also said he intended to devote more of his life to charitable work and helping people in need.

But Judge Tanya Brinkley challenged Matis after he discussed his education and financial donations, emphasizing the severity of his actions and the family’s loss.
“Let’s talk about what matters, which is the fact that you single-handedly and voluntarily crashed your car into their home, where people are supposed to be safe and secure, and you killed a man,” Brinkley said.
Matis did acknowledge that he could not undo the harm he had caused.
“He had loved ones, and I have shattered — I put holes in their lives I can’t possibly fill. I can’t undo this,” he said.
Bezy’s family said they hope the tragedy serves as a warning to other drivers about the dangers of driving under the influence.
“Just don’t drink and drive. It’s as simple as that,” Claire Bezy said.
Matis was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by probation. He must also complete 200 hours of community service, and his driver’s license was suspended.
