A ramp that debuted at 5 a.m. Friday now connects the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 836) eastbound to I-95 northbound in Miami-Dade.

In a news release, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials said the connection would provide “major relief for daily commuters” by eliminating the need to use local streets such as State Road 7/U.S. 441/Northwest 7th Avenue or Northwest 167th Street to access I-95.

The construction is part of the $1.04 billion Golden Glades Interchange Project, which started in March 2024. The overhaul of the major thoroughfare is expected to continue through 2031. A list of all the proposed improvements can be found here.

According to FDOT, “more than 400,000 vehicles passing through daily, and traffic is projected to increase by 50 percent by 2040. Without the project’s improvements, congestion is only expected to worsen.”

Officials said it took two years to build the ramp, and that it was completed five years ahead of schedule.
