Tuesday is the last day to apply to the waiting list for Section 8 housing vouchers in Hialeah.

The Hialeah Housing Authority announced the official opening of their Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. The deadline is 4:59 p.m. Tuesday.
Section 8 is a program that helps meet eligible residents’ needs in housing assistance by helping to pay a portion of their rent. Factors such as income, family size, immigration status and more also can affect who are eligible.
HHA said they were accepting only online applications.
People or families do have to meet a certain income limit in order to apply. Here are the requirements:
Annual Income Limits for Program Participation:
- 1 person – $47,700
- 2 persons – $54,500
- 3 persons – $61,300
- 4 persons – $68,100
- 5 persons – $73,550
- 6 persons – $79,000
- 7 persons – $84,450
- 8 persons – $89,900
In order to successfully submit an application, residents need to be prepared to provide details such as their full name, social security number, birthdate and more.

Because of an expected high volume of applicants, the HHA say they will use a lottery system to pick those who will take part in the program. However, there are certain categories of applicants that will get preference.
Groups with preferences:
- Elderly or disabled
- Displacement due to a federally recognized natural disaster
- Moving up
- Homelessness
- Jurisdiction
- Non-elderly disabled applicants who are transitioning out of institutional and other segregated settings at serious risks of institutionalization, homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
- Person with disabilities
The HHA is accepting only one application per household. Those who submit more than one application on behalf of their family will be disqualified.
