Noting his “gridiron heroics,” EA Sports called Williams “the future.”
The Standard Edition of the cover features Williams’ “signature mid-air throw” while a Deluxe Edition marks a nod to his nickname as the “Iceman,” including custom nail art with the EA Sports logo.
Williams became the first Bears player to grace the cover of the English-language version of the Madden NFL video game franchise, he’s also the first quarterback to appear on the cover since Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen was chosen for the spot in the 2023 edition of the video game.
The two editions of “Madden NFL 27” are expected to launch on Aug. 13. A full game reveal is scheduled for Thursday on YouTube.
Williams did not immediately comment on the feature, but he did share posts from EA Sports showcasing the cover.
In a statement released by the Bears, he recalled the moment he learned of the news.
“I went upstairs [at Halas Hall] and hung out with [chief administrative officer] Ted [Crews] and [President & CEO] Kevin [Warren], and they ended up popping it up on me and telling me that I was going to be the cover athlete,” Williams said. “I was super excited, super juiced. Excited to be the first Bear to be a part of this and the cover athlete.
“It’s something like a wishing star, a shooting star, a dream come true. It’s all of the above. Everything and more.”

The NFL later shared behind-the-scenes footage of Williams recreating his signature throw for the cover shot.
Williams has taken Chicago by storm in the two years since the Bears selected him first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
He had a strong 2025 season for the Bears, going 11-6 and throwing 27 touchdown passes as the team captured their first NFC North title since the 2018 campaign. He also led the team to their first playoff appearance since 2020.
During his stellar season, Williams set a record for most passing yards by a Bears quarterback, and had a slew of memorable moments, including a game-winning 52-yard touchdown pass against the Green Bay Packers that cemented his nickname of “Iceman.”
He then continued his heroics in the playoffs, throwing four touchdown passes and leading the Bears to their first postseason win over the Packers since the 1940s.
While Williams is the first Bears player to ever appear on the English language-version of the video game, he isn’t the first Bears player to grace a Madden cover of any kind. That honor actually belongs to former Bears offensive lineman Roberto Garza, who was on the Spanish language-version of the game in 2009.
Last year’s “Madden” cover featured Eagles superstar running back Saquon Barkley.
