Last week, Gio Reyna and his wife, Chloe, were sitting in a parking lot, outside a smoothie shop in Connecticut, waiting to hear if he\u2019d made Team USA\u2019s World Cup roster. They knew word would be coming from the coaching staff any minute, but they wanted to be alone.<\/p>\n

Back at his wife\u2019s family\u2019s house, he said, \u201cWe knew there would be some nerves.\u201d His parents were elsewhere, also \u201cwaiting anxiously,\u201d Reyna said. \u201cJust like I was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon enough, Reyna received notice: he\u2019d made the roster. He called his parents to share the news. \u201cJust over the moon,\u201d he said, describing their reaction.Years ago, he was considered the next great young American soccer player, the son of two former members of the men\u2019s and women\u2019s national teams, Claudio and Danielle Reyna. He was only a teenager when he went to train with Borussia Dortmund in Germany. A young, attacking midfielder with preternatural touch, he could dribble through entire defenses or create an advantage with a perfect pass \u2014 skills that cannot exactly be taught.<\/p>\n

But at the 2022 World Cup, Reyna didn\u2019t play much. Questions swirled about his effort, his attitude, and lack of fitness. He seemed to be in coach Gregg Berhalter\u2019s doghouse. Reyna had just turned 20 years old. Eventually, the situation devolved into a full-blown soap opera between Reyna\u2019s parents and the coach, who had known one another for decades.<\/p>\n

Berhalter was fired two years later after a poor performance in the Copa America and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, an Argentinian who had managed world-class clubs Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. Now, Pochettino had chosen Reyna to be among the 26 players he would take to the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cGio [has] amazing talent and experience,\u201d Pochettino said Tuesday at a news conference in Manhattan announcing the roster. He added: \u201cI really trust in him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minutes later, Reyna met with a horde of media to answer questions, alongside several of his teammates. Reyna didn\u2019t seem to really want to excavate the 2022 World Cup.<\/p>\n

Did he reflect on what happened?\u201cReflect? I guess,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a while ago. But yeah, it happened. It is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was he disappointed he didn\u2019t play more in 2022? \u201cI mean, of course,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone wants to play every minute of every game. But sometimes it doesn\u2019t work like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

What did he learn from that experience? How was he different now, four years later? \u201cUhh, not much, I guess,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

The past four years, Reyna\u2019s club career hadn\u2019t gone to plan, either. He hadn\u2019t broken into the starting lineup playing for Dortmund in the Bundesliga, or during his one season playing for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, nor this season, his first playing for Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach, a less prestigious Bundesliga team.<\/p>\n

At times on Tuesday, Reyna sounded humbled by it all. \u201cThis time around, I\u2019m just willing to do whatever it takes,\u201d Reyna said. \u201cWhatever\u2019s called for by me, I\u2019ll be willing to help.\u201d He repeated that he wanted \u201cto help the team in whatever way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyna suggested that the whole team<\/em> had grown up since the last World Cup, and that experience would be one of the team\u2019s strengths. \u201cThere\u2019s so many players who have developed,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really competitive. A lot of guys are close to, or in, their primes. We\u2019re all older. We\u2019ve matured as people and as players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pochettino made no public promises to Reyna: \u201cI don\u2019t say that he is going to play the game,\u201d Pochettino said. \u201cBut he can help. He can help because he\u2019s a different player, different talent. And I think in all the roster, you need to have a player like him.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point, a reporter asked Reyna to describe the difference between Berhalter and Pochettino. \u201cYou\u2019re putting me on the spot here a little bit,\u201d Reyna said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have a lot of the same qualities,\u201d Reyna continued. \u201cIt\u2019s just \u2026 maybe a little bit more of the South American, maybe a little bit looser culture [now]. Where Gregg had a few more rules. But I don\u2019t know. They\u2019re both demanding. Both gave a lot of freedom to the players. But at the end of the day, you need to train, you need to prepare, you need to play. And if you did those things well, then both coaches gave you freedom to enjoy off the pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pochettino said he trusted Reyna, and that was not lost on the 23-year-old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a lot; I can\u2019t thank him enough,\u201d Reyna said. \u201cAt the end of the day, I want to repay him on the pitch and help this team be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n
