During National EMS Week, communities are recognizing the work of emergency medical technicians, paramedics and first responders. In Broward County, EMS worker William Dunham highlights the importance of behind-the-scenes roles \u2014 and the strengths that set him apart.<\/p>\n

At American Medical Response operations in Pompano Beach, Dunham welcomes visitors with an easy smile and a quick tour of his workspace.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome this way,\u201d he says, opening a door with a flourish.<\/p>\n

The 24-year old is certified as both an EMT and paramedic, but his current role is vehicle service technician. He compares it to working at a car dealership \u2014 but with medical equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink of it as a dealer for cars, but instead of cars, I deal medical supplies and equipment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His job includes organizing emergency bags, stocking supplies, checking equipment and making sure everything is ready for crews heading out on calls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where I work,\u201d he said, gesturing across a busy room. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of things going on here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunham takes pride in supporting the teams on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I may be at the very foundation of it all, I am still an important part,\u201d he said. \u201cI help my crews get what they need so they can be safely out on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colleagues say Dunham stands out not only for his dedication, but also for his perspective as someone on the autism spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a power that not everyone has,\u201d he said. \u201cI have an emotional insight where I can understand emotions and body language. It\u2019s a heightened sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

He calls it his \u201csuperpower.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI call it my superpower,\u201d he said, laughing. \u201cOther than me being talkative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Supervisors say Dunham\u2019s personality lifts morale in a demanding environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of times, we\u2019re responding to someone\u2019s bad day,\u201d said Shawn Swaine, an administrative supervisor at AMR. \u201cHis joyfulness and quirkiness really brighten the atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n

That energy shows up even in routine tasks. While demonstrating EKG equipment, Dunham offered a lighthearted warning.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t do this at home \u2014 you want to be certified,\u201d he joked, before carefully checking the device again before sending it out with a crew.<\/p>\n

For Dunham, every detail matters \u2014 and every part of the job plays a role in saving lives.<\/p>\n
