Foul play is now suspected in the disappearance of an elderly woman from Miami who vanished three years ago as her son is now facing fraud and theft charges, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Eduardo Lopez-Hernandez, 66, was arrested Thursday on charges including organized fraud, theft from elderly, public assistance fraud and aggravated abuse of an elderly or disabled adult, Miami-Dade jail records showed.<\/p>\n

According to an arrest report, Lopez-Hernandez allegedly stole Social Security and Electronic Benefit Transfer benefits from his mother, Edis Lopez Collazo.<\/p>\n

The mother hasn’t been seen or heard from since April 6, 2023. She was 84 at the time of her disappearance.<\/p>\n

Both lived together at a home on Northwest 24th Avenue near Northwest 29th Street in Allapattah.<\/p>\n

Lopez-Hernandez told police that about three months before his mother’s disappearance, she had been defecating on herself, the report said.<\/p>\n

He admitted to failing to provide his mom with proper care or assistance because he was uncomfortable seeing her unclothed, the report said.<\/p>\n

According to his arrest report, Lopez-Hernandez admitted to using his mom’s EBT card and Social Security benefits to pay household utility expenses after she disappeared.<\/p>\n

He also told investigators he disconnected his mother’s phone line to save money, the report said.<\/p>\n

Throughout their investigation detectives said Lopez-Hernandez has provided inconsistent statements to police and didn’t show up to a planned media event to request the public’s help in the search for his missing mom, saying he wasn’t feeling well.<\/p>\n

An arrest warrant said Lopez-Hernandez told police he left his mom on the front porch of their home while he went to get food and returned 40 minutes later to find her gone.<\/p>\n

But when detectives reviewed a neighbor’s surveillance camera with a clear view of their front porch, it contradicted his timeline of events, instead showing he left the home much earlier and didn’t return for almost 10 hours, the warrant said.<\/p>\n

His mom was never seen on the video outside of her home or in the surrounding area.<\/p>\n

Lopez-Hernandez hasn’t been charged in connection with her disappearance. He appeared before a judge on Friday who set his bond at $62,500.<\/p>\n

Miami Police spokesperson Kiara Delva was asked Friday if investigators think he had anything to do with her disappearance.<\/p>\n

“At this time that is still part of the ongoing investigation, detectives did confirm that it does appear to be foul play however we cannot pin it on the son just yet but it is still part of the ongoing investigation,” Delva said. “Even though this has been a significant time since she\u2019s been missing detectives are still very much active in this investigation, our homicide detectives are still actively looking into it and we want to remind the community that please, if you see anyone, if you see something suspicious, or maybe something that’s out of the ordinary, the smallest tip can help detectives solve a case.”<\/p>\n
