A South Florida congresswoman is demanding answers after what she says she witnessed during an unannounced visit to an ICE processing facility in Miramar.<\/p>\n

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, said she toured the facility Thursday after hearing concerns from immigrant advocates and families. She said her visit corroborated allegations that people are being held in overcrowded rooms with little privacy.<\/p>\n

“I can tell you that the conditions that they’re being held in are horrific,” Wasserman Schultz said.<\/p>\n

The Miramar location is intended to serve as a check-in and processing facility. According to Wasserman Schultz, individuals are generally supposed to be held there for no more than 12 hours.<\/p>\n

However, the congresswoman said officials operating the facility told her they now have a waiver allowing them to hold people for up to three days.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDuring a press conference held at the ICE ERO Miramar Field Office, advocates discussed their top concern, which was overcrowding at the facility.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Wasserman Schultz said facility staff told her the holding rooms are designed to accommodate 56 people. She said she observed between 70 and 75 men being held in two holding areas.<\/p>\n

“There are literally people lining the floors,” she said. “There is absolutely no room at all. It is wall-to-wall people.”<\/p>\n

The congresswoman also said she was told the women’s holding room measures approximately 7 by 14 feet. She alleged each holding room has a toilet in the corner without adequate privacy, forcing detainees to eat, sleep and use the restroom in the same confined space.<\/p>\n

She said detainees receive three meals a day and a refillable bottle of water. According to Wasserman Schultz, the meals consist of small microwavable entrees.<\/p>\n

NBC6’s chopper captured long lines outside the Miramar facility Thursday. While the congresswoman was speaking with reporters, a fire truck and an ambulance also arrived at the facility.<\/p>\n

Wasserman Schultz also criticized restroom access outside the building, saying there was a single portable toilet available for both men and women despite hundreds of people being processed there.<\/p>\n

Her visit came one day after immigrant advocates held a news conference denouncing conditions at the facility.<\/p>\n

The congresswoman said she believes the recent Supreme Court decision ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians will likely result in more people being held at the Miramar facility.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, NBC6 reported allegations of overcrowding and concerns that people waiting outside the facility had limited access to water and restrooms.<\/p>\n

At the time, ICE denied those allegations, telling NBC6 that the Miramar site is a “check-in location” and that “the number of individuals held at the facility varies based on operational needs.”<\/p>\n

NBC6 has reached out to ICE for a response to the allegations made by Wasserman Schultz following her visit. As of publication, the agency had not responded.<\/p>\n
