Kawhi Leonard, who led the Toronto Raptors to their only NBA title in 2019, reportedly is rejoining his former team after a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.<\/p>\n

Toronto will send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, one pick swap and two second-rounders to Los Angeles in exchange for Leonard, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.<\/p>\n

Leonard, 35, spent the last seven seasons with the Clippers after signing as a free agent in 2019. Over 331 regular season games, he averaged 25.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists. He averaged a career-high 27.9 points last season, finishing seventh in MVP voting and Second-Team All-NBA.<\/p>\n

Despite his impressive counting numbers with the Clippers, Leonard was never able to consistently stay on the floor and deliver in the postseason. He played 65 games or more in just two of his seven years with the franchise, and missed the entire 2021-22 season. The Clippers’ deepest run came in 2021, when they lost in the Western Conference Finals with Leonard sidelined due to a torn ACL.<\/p>\n

As for the Raptors, they’ve been chasing glory for years since Leonard left as a free agent. His one season in Toronto was the best in franchise history, with 58 wins and the Finals victory. The Raptors returned to the playoffs last season after three years in the lottery, so the team could see Leonard as a piece to get them back into contention to win the East.<\/p>\n

Leonard only has one year left on his contract, but Charania reported that he views this as an opportunity to retire in Toronto.<\/p>\n

None of Leonard’s teammates from the Raptors’ title-winning team are still on the roster, so it’ll be a completely new environment for the seven-time All-Star. Toronto’s coach, Darko Rajakovic, took over in 2023, and has helped develop young talent in Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett and Collin Murray-Boyles.<\/p>\n

With the Leonard era now over, the Clippers will turn the page toward a younger roster. They traded away James Harden for Darius Garland at the deadline last season, then drafted Illinois guard Keaton Wagner at No. 5 last week. Ingram, who will be 29 in September, is now one of the few veterans on the roster.<\/p>\n

The Clippers-Raptors trade is just the latest star transaction in what’s been a wild NBA offseason. Former All-Stars Giannis Antetokounmpo (Heat), Tyler Herro (Bucks), Julius Randle (Nets), LaMelo Ball (Timberwolves) and Ja Morant (Blazers) have all changed teams so far.<\/p>\n
