Team USA takes the field to face off against Team Bosnia on Wednesday night. And one of their star players grew up right here in South Florida.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old soccer player, Alex Freeman, made his debut with the U.S. Men\u2019s National Soccer Team last year, but is now participating in his first-ever World Cup. It\u2019s a dream that he and his family still can\u2019t believe is reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one thing I noticed early on was how much better he was than the kids around him at soccer,\u201d said Jake Hinkle, Freeman\u2019s stepfather.<\/p>\n

At 4 years old, Freeman was introduced to soccer by his stepfather, and first coach, Hinkle. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can tell on the soccer side, yeah, there was a difference between him and most of the kids out there,” Hinkle said.<\/p>\n

While Freeman played other sports, soccer continued to be his passion.<\/p>\n

And he pursued it even when met with hardship. Freeman was a player at Weston FC Academy when he tried for Inter Miami\u2019s Academy, but didn\u2019t make the team. He later joined Orlando City\u2019s Academy and then signed to their MLS Reserve team.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust seeing what it took to get to this point and some of the challenges he\u2019s faced. It certainly has been talked about, he wasn\u2019t always the first selection,” Hinkle said. “But something like playing for Orlando City\u2019s second team for three seasons and putting the work in and seeing it now pay off, it\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAlex Freeman comes from a Super Bowl bloodline, but he chose a different kind of football. After scoring for the USMNT against Australia, the son of Packers legend Antonio Freeman is showing he is more than a famous last name.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Freeman\u2019s persistence granted him a spot on the U.S. Men\u2019s National Team, a starting position in Gold Cup matches, the opportunity to play for Villarreal, and now, being able to play at the World Cup stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last year and a half has gone from \u2018keep putting the work in, I think you\u2019ll get there\u2019 to \u2018wow, you\u2019ve made it\u2019,\u201d Hinkle said with a smile.<\/p>\n

And thanks to Freeman\u2019s performance on the World Cup stage, he\u2019s now become one of the<\/em> players to watch. It\u2019s a pride his first coach has been proud to witness. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a lot. I mean, look, and he\u2019s my oldest son. I\u2019ve been with him since he was 3 years old, so it\u2019s like any father would feel,” Hinkle said. \u201cThere\u2019s a ton of pride and just thankful I was able to be there for him and play a role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hinkle has now gone from coaching on the sidelines to cheering in the stands. When asked how he reacted when seeing his son score a goal during a World Cup game, \u201cYou are fighting back tears of joy, of course,\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Hinkle and his family are hoping to continue watching Freeman\u2019s dreams end in victory. You can watch USA vs. Bosnia on Telemundo and Peacock in Spanish.<\/p>\n
