Baseball may be America\u2019s pastime \u2014 but for millions across the Caribbean, cricket holds that title. And in South Florida, where large Caribbean communities have put down roots, the sport is experiencing a major surge in popularity.<\/p>\n

From Broward County parks to youth academies, cricket is becoming one of the region\u2019s fastest\u2011growing sports, fueled by families determined to keep cultural traditions alive while introducing the game to their U.S.-born children.<\/p>\n

A Rapidly Growing Cricket Hub<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lauderhill has become a centerpiece of American cricket. The city hosted Major League Cricket matches last year, drawing crowds from across the Caribbean diaspora.<\/p>\n

\u201cCricket has an amazing, rich history in the Caribbean,\u201d said Johnny Grave, CEO of Major League Cricket. \u201cIt\u2019s a massive part of the culture and identity of the Caribbean\u2026 the one thing that binds the Caribbean together.\u201d<\/p>\n

As professional leagues expand, South Florida\u2019s cricket footprint continues to grow \u2014 from recreational leagues to international\u2011level events.<\/p>\n

Teaching the Game \u2014 and the Culture Behind It<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the Florida Cricket Academy, coaches are focused on more than batting technique and bowling form. They\u2019re using the sport to teach discipline, teamwork, and cultural pride.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing in South Florida, there\u2019s a lot of West Indian children trying to get involved in cricket,\u201d said Timmy Surujbally, the academy\u2019s head coach. \u201cI hope we can get more Caribbean youngsters joining the academy to continue that great West Indian legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surujbally said watching young players embrace the sport gives him \u201cthat joy and that heritage from the Caribbean.\u201d<\/p>\n

The academy\u2019s founder, Wayne Ramnarine, created the program to give kids a structured place to learn the sport \u2014 and their roots.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe began as a place for kids to keep their culture, learn about their culture, learn about the sport,\u201d Ramnarine said. \u201cThere was cricket going on, but no structured program where kids could learn the proper way.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Bridge Between Generations<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many families, cricket is a link between the Caribbean and their American lives \u2014 a way for children born in the U.S. to stay connected to the traditions their parents and grandparents grew up with.<\/p>\n

And as the sport gains visibility nationwide, advocates say it\u2019s reaching new audiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere in the U.S., a big part of our long\u2011term strategy is getting cricket into mainstream schools and the college system,\u201d said Grave. \u201cThat\u2019s crucial for more people to understand the game, become aware of it, and hopefully want to play it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cricket\u2019s Olympic Return<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cricket is set to reach an even wider global audience when it returns to the Summer Olympics\u00a0at the LA28 Games\u00a0in Los Angeles. Both men\u2019s and women\u2019s tournaments will be played in the fast\u2011paced T20 format.<\/p>\n

It will mark cricket\u2019s first Olympic appearance in 128 years, following its only previous inclusion at the 1900 Paris Games.<\/p>\n
