You don\u2019t have to be dead to be an organ donor.<\/p>\n

A South Florida couple is trying to spread the message about living kidney donation. They each have only one kidney after donating the other one to their siblings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo my brother used to tell me you\u2019re only as old as your youngest body part, so when he peed, he was 10 years younger,\u201d Craig Blinderman said as his wife and sister-in-law laughed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three adults, with only three kidneys between them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou only need one to live,\u201d said Ana Saruski, who received a kidney from her sister, Judy, who is Craig\u2019s wife.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Saruski is correct, and the Blindermans are living proof.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How unusual is it to have a husband and wife who\u2019ve each donated a kidney?<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we haven\u2019t met anybody yet who\u2019s come out of the woodwork and said, hey, we\u2019ve done that, too!\u201d Craig Blinderman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He donated a kidney to his brother, Rick, 33 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an incredible miracle that I had a chance to participate in, and I had the opportunity to see my brother be restored from being sick to being healthy,\u201d Craig Blinderman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is immediately before the transplant,\u201d Judy Blinderman said, pointing to a picture showing her and Saruski in separate stretchers, smiling as they\u2019re about to be wheeled into the operating room at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Judy Blinderman gave a kidney to her sister just two months ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is truly the best thing I\u2019ve ever done in my entire life. I don\u2019t know that I have the words to describe how it feels to know that my sister isn\u2019t sick anymore,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How ill was Saruski before the transplant? She suffered from polycystic kidney disease, which left her in searing pain and constantly exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt very sick, also very fatigued, as the kidney disease progressed and I reached what they call end-stage kidney failure,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Saruski and Judy Blinderman were always close growing up, so Judy did not hesitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, everybody said to me, are you scared, are you nervous, I had no fear, and it\u2019s because of Craig, because I have been living for 26-plus years with a person who was a live donor that has had a completely normal life,\u201d Judy Blinderman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rick Blinderman had 24 good years before he passed away, rising to partner in his law firm, raising children, and even becoming a grandfather.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reminds me of what the kidney transplant really represents,\u201d Craig Blinderman said, showing us a painting made by his \u201cRenaissance man\u201d brother.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Saruski, grateful doesn\u2019t begin to describe her feelings for her \u201cspare parts\u201d sister. Judy Blinderman actually wore a hoodie with the phrase \u201cSpare Parts\u201d to the hospital for the transplant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI just think how miraculous it is that now I\u2019m healthy and I can enjoy life again, I can cook for my family again, I\u2019m going back to work on Monday, and I feel energized to go to work,\u201d Saruski said. \u201cI feel that she\u2019s selfless. I think she\u2019s a hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel like a hero, and I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m selfless,\u201d Judy Blinderman responded. \u201cI actually feel like I did this a little selfishly because I love my sister so much that the thought of her not being around killed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thanks to a profound gift, Judy Blinderman will have her sister around for years to come, and a husband who knows exactly how that feels.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, how is life with one kidney? They can\u2019t take some medications, and they have to stay hydrated and watch their protein intake, and there\u2019s one more drawback.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t engage in contact sports, unfortunately, so there goes my NFL career,\u201d Judy Blinderman said.<\/p>\n
