Two Miami roommates say they were forced to defend themselves after a man armed with a large kitchen knife allegedly entered their apartment and tried to evict them.<\/p>\n

The incident happened Monday afternoon at the Art Plaza apartment building in Miami.<\/p>\n

Brock Tidwell said he was in his room eating a snack when he noticed an unexpected visitor standing in his doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just eating some food. I was doing some cheese and crackers, and I see a guy come into the room,\u201d Tidwell said. \u201cHe just opens it and is standing at the doorway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tA man is facing charges after police say he forced his way into a Miami apartment armed with a knife in an apparent attempt to remove two tenants who had not paid rent. NBC6’s Jamie Guirola reports\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

According to Tidwell, the man was holding a large chef\u2019s knife and told him in Spanish to gather his belongings and leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me, \u2018Pack yourself, let\u2019s go,\u2019\u201d Tidwell recalled.<\/p>\n

Fearing for his safety, Tidwell said he immediately called out to his roommate for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started yelling for Jay, saying, \u2018Hey, he\u2019s got a knife, help,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Miami Police, Tidwell began recording the encounter on his cellphone, and the suspect allegedly lunged at him in an attempt to knock the phone out of his hand.<\/p>\n

The man was later identified as Jose Ramirez.<\/p>\n

Tidwell and his roommate Jayden said they wrestled Ramirez to the ground and held him there until officers arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe kept trying to grab into his pockets,\u201d Jayden said. \u201cSo we kept telling him, \u2018Put your hands above your head on the ground.\u2019 Every time he didn\u2019t want to do that, I would make him stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

The roommates said they recorded video of the confrontation but declined to share it publicly in order to protect the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n

Police said Ramirez had been sent to the apartment to remove the tenants on behalf of the woman subletting the unit, identified as Charin Ojeda.<\/p>\n

Both Ramirez and Ojeda were arrested and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling.<\/p>\n

Miami Police said the alleged attempt to remove the tenants was not a legal eviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is against the law,\u201d Miami police said. \u201cResidents of homes or apartments have to go through the legal system. This involves receiving an eviction notice, obtaining an eviction order, and the Miami-Dade County Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2014not the landlord\u2014is responsible for carrying out that order.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of Tuesday night, Ramirez remained in jail with an immigration hold and had been denied bond.<\/p>\n
