The Federal Communications Commission on Monday blasted Disney\u2019s push for public support amid the agency\u2019s probes of \u201cThe View\u201d and ABC\u2019s broadcast licenses, the latest development in Disney\u2019s growing standoff with regulators. <\/p>\n

The FCC, under Trump-appointed Chair Brendan Carr, said in February that it was looking into whether \u201cThe View\u201d violated equal-time rules after an appearance by James Talarico, the Democratic candidate in November\u2019s U.S. Senate race in Texas. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe View,\u201d which first aired in 1997, is co-hosted by a panel of women who interview politicians and celebrities. Seeking to rally support from viewers, ABC launched a campaign Monday urging people to push back against what it says are threats to free speech. <\/p>\n

Its on-air spots call on the public to petition the FCC to \u201clet the viewers decide\u201d what they want on their airwaves.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018The View\u2019 has welcomed your favorite guests and covered the issues you\u2019ve cared about for nearly 30 years,\u201d a voice-over says in one of the ads. \u201cNow the FCC wants to control who is allowed to appear on the show. Viewers, use your voice. Scan this QR code. You have until July 6.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing ABC\u2019s new campaign, an FCC spokesperson said in a statement Monday: \u201cDisney wants the FCC to classify \u2018The View\u2019 as a \u2018bona fide news program.\u2019 And it has chosen to run a campaign of misinformation to make its case\u2014misleading viewers about the law. That is a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for \u201cThe View\u201d did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.<\/p>\n

Under FCC regulations, \u201cbona fide\u201d news programs are exempt from equal-time rules that generally to competing political candidates. <\/p>\n

Carr wrote Monday on X that classifying the show as a \u201cbona fide news program\u201d \u201cwould exempt \u2018The View\u2019 from the political equal time requirements that Congress passed decades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think? Is \u2018The View\u2019 bona fide news?\u201d Carr continued.<\/p>\n

ABC argued in a filing to the FCC in May that \u201cThe View\u201d airs under an exemption to the equal-time rule \u201cgranted to it more than twenty years ago.\u201d <\/p>\n

ABC\u2019s filing was registered on behalf of KTRK-TV, the network\u2019s owned station in Houston, with ABC\u2019s lawyers saying the station was ordered to file a formal request asking whether \u201cThe View\u201d qualified for the exemption. The network said \u201cit has never been disputed\u201d that \u201cThe View\u201d is a so-called bona fide news show.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome may dislike certain \u2014 or even most \u2014 of the viewpoints expressed on \u2018The View\u2019 or similar shows,\u201d ABC said in the 52-page document. \u201cSuch dislike, however, cannot justify using regulatory processes to restrict those views.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FCC in April directing Disney\u2019s eight owned-and-operated television stations to file their broadcast license renewals ahead of schedule following a clash between the White House and ABC over a joke late-night host Jimmy Kimmel made about first lady Melania Trump.<\/p>\n

Carr has previously insisted the ABC license review stems from the FCC\u2019s probe of Disney\u2019s diversity, equity and inclusion practices \u2014 not \u201cspeech.\u201d<\/p>\n
