A TV host in Argentina resigned from her role on a popular streaming show after falsely reporting that Lionel Messi\u2019s father had died amid his son\u2019s run in the World Cup, an error she later blamed on unverified information fed to her through an earpiece.<\/p>\n

Florencia Pe\u00f1a, the now-former host of \u201cEl Show del Verano\u201d on Luzu TV, announced her exit Thursday on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI accept that I am partly to blame for this mistake, and that is why I decided to step aside and end my participation on Luzu,\u201d\u00a0Pe\u00f1a wrote on X in Spanish. \u201cI offer my heartfelt apologies\u2014I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Pe\u00f1a, a producer relayed the false information to her through an earpiece during a live broadcast. She trusted the information and repeated it on air.<\/p>\n

\u201cI apologize to the Messi family for the terrible ordeal I can only imagine they are going through. I am deeply ashamed to have been the source of this pain,\u201d Pe\u00f1a added.<\/p>\n

The Messi family shared a statement Thursday clarifying that Jorge Messi, Lionel\u2019s father, \u201cis currently dealing with a health issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is presently under medical supervision, recovering, and showing favorable progress given his condition,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

In response to the rumors that began circulating online about the state of Jorge Messi, the family said that \u201conly his immediate family possesses accurate and reliable information regarding Jorge\u2019s condition. Therefore, any account, statement, or information not originating from the family itself or its official channels should not be considered valid or truthful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Messi family also expressed its \u201cdeep distress regarding the lack of sensitivity, respect, and scruples shown by some individuals in handling a strictly private family matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicol\u00e1s Occhiato, founder and general producer of Luzu TV, said Thursday that management at the streaming channel \u201cdecided to terminate the employment of all those responsible\u201d for airing false information about the Messi family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe at Luzu TV deeply regret what happened on the air during the program \u2018El Show del Verano.\u2019 Our channel considers it unacceptable to broadcast sensitive information without proper prior verification,\u201d\u00a0Occhiato said in Spanish on X. \u201cWe reaffirm our commitment to responsible, respectful, and rigorous journalism.\u201d Occhiato did not say how many people were terminated.<\/p>\n

The ordeal began days after Messi scored his\u00a0first World Cup hat trick\u00a0for Argentina during a match against Algeria on Tuesday. The hat trick moved Messi into a tie with Germany\u2019s Miroslav Klose for the World Cup career\u00a0scoring record with 16 goals.<\/p>\n

Messi\u2019s next World Cup game with Argentina is on Monday at Dallas Stadium (AT&T Stadium) in Arlington, Texas, against Austria.<\/p>\n
