Before the World Cup started, Tim Payne had under 5,000 followers on Instagram.<\/p>\n

Now with New Zealand playing in its first group game vs. Iraq, Payne’s following is at 5.8 million and counting. He’s also set for a bigger move at club level.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old reportedly has verbally agreed to join Paraguayan side Club Olimpia following New Zealand’s run in the tournament. Journalist Fabrizio Romano and The Associated Press reported on the negotiations with the deal not yet confirmed by the team.<\/p>\n

Payne currently plays for Wellington Phoenix of the A-League, which combines top teams from Australia and New Zealand. Wellington finished eighth this season, with Payne being a member since 2019.<\/p>\n

Payne’s follower count grew thanks to Argentine influencer El Scarso, who identified him as the least-followed player at the World Cup. He then requested fans to follow Payne to make him famous.<\/p>\n

Typically a right-back, Payne has been used in multiple positions before. He doesn’t offer speed but is a gritty defender who can support with crosses in attack.<\/p>\n

Olimpia is the reigning champion in Paraguay. The club has won a record 48 league titles in the country.<\/p>\n

Payne’s New Zealand is seeking its first ever win at the World Cup. The All Whites will face Egypt next before meeting Belgium in the group finale. They opened the tournament in Los Angeles to a thrilling 2-2 draw vs. Iran.<\/p>\n

Cape Verde goalie Vozinha, 40, made a similar breakthrough on social media, as he went from around 50,000 to over 10 million and counting after holding Spain to a shocking 0-0 draw.<\/p>\n
