Emmalyn Perez\u00a0dreamt up the idea for her Etsy business while\u00a0living out of a van.<\/p>\n

It was 2023,\u00a0and she was traversing the U.S. with her husband,\u00a0who\u00a0picked up a job teaching French online. She was brainstorming ways to\u00a0pitch in for their travel and day-to-day expenses when she\u00a0was reminded of an old pandemic-era hobby: cross-stitching, a popular type of embroidery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI started posting [on YouTube] about cross\u00a0stitch\u00a0during the pandemic,\u201d\u00a0Perez\u00a0said.\u00a0“I realized I didn’t like\u00a0a lot of the\u00a0patterns I found … they were really, really old-fashioned.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

So\u00a0she started making her own, setting up\u00a0shop\u00a0on Etsy\u00a0under the name\u00a0BewitchedStitchery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perez\u2019s\u00a0earliest patterns, which she was able to create on the road and sell digitally on Etsy \u2014 widely considered the top digital marketplace for small businesses \u2014 took inspiration from pop culture pillars like\u00a0Taylor Swift and the\u00a0\u201cTwilight\u201d\u00a0and \u201cHarry Potter\u201d\u00a0franchises.\u00a0Her shop started to gain momentum, and once she settled down in one\u00a0place,\u00a0she expanded it to physical\u00a0items, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But that momentum hit a roadblock\u00a0in February\u00a02025, when\u00a0President Donald Trump enacted global tariffs\u00a0on\u00a0imports from\u00a0China. The Supreme Court ruled against some of the tariffs but Trump responded by imposing new ones, leaving an unsettled market.<\/p>\n

One of Perez\u2019s best sellers at the time\u00a0was\u00a0a tiny\u00a0magnetic accessory\u00a0called a \u201cneedle-minder\u201d used to keep embroidery needles from getting lost or injuring the user.\u00a0The machines\u00a0that\u00a0produce\u00a0Perez\u2019s product\u00a0quickly and cheaply\u00a0in China\u00a0are heavily restricted in the\u00a0U.S.,\u00a0because\u00a0they’re\u00a0similar to\u00a0the machines\u00a0used to make U.S. currency.\u00a0Relocating production to the U.S. and still making a profit would be\u00a0nearly impossible.<\/p>\n
