Anyone who spends a South Florida summer afternoon outside knows the heat hits differently.<\/p>\n

A new climate report warns that heat could spell trouble for the World Cup, with Miami Stadium ranked as one of the highest-risk venues for extreme heat.<\/p>\n

NBC6 First Alert Meteorologist Ryan Philips says summer temperatures in Miami regularly climb into the mid-80s, but humidity can make it feel much hotter.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust think about what South Florida is like in the summer. We’ve got the heat, we’ve got the humidity, we’ve got the storms with the lightning threat. It’s a multiple-threat environment,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n

FIFA uses a heat stress metric that factors in temperature, humidity, wind and direct sunlight. This year, FIFA is taking a new approach by requiring three-minute cooling breaks at the 22-minute mark of each half. Fans will also be allowed to bring in sealed plastic water bottles.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFIFA says mandatory hydration breaks at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are designed to protect players from extreme heat. But with hundreds of new commercial slots created across the tournament, some fans are questioning whether the breaks are also a major revenue opportunity.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

Dr. Eitan Joshua, an emergency medicine doctor, says the hydration breaks are necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have this hydration break, which I think is super, super necessary,\u201d Dr. Joshua said. \u201cYou might need really even more, but at the very bare minimum, yes, to prevent the dehydration that can occur with a lot of sweating and the increased heart rate.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just the players.<\/p>\n

From referees running the length of the field to fans in the stands, doctors say the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is real, especially when alcohol is involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo things like your heart rate goes much faster, and if the heart rate goes faster, then your body cannot put oxygen in the right places as efficiently. And then that leads to a whole slew of things,\u201d Dr. Joshua said.<\/p>\n

Climate experts point to rising global temperatures making extreme heat events more common.<\/p>\n

While South Florida teams often use the heat and humidity as a home-field advantage, many World Cup visitors may not be ready for these conditions.<\/p>\n

Doctors recommend drinking at least a cup of water every 30 to 60 minutes, wearing lightweight clothing and taking breaks when possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, this is a fun environment, and everyone’s coming here to have this maybe once-in-a-lifetime experience,\u201d Philips said. \u201cUnfortunately, lurking in the background, really, it’s our bodies working harder just to stay cool and just to try to stay safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

That warning also applies to people tailgating and celebrating at outdoor watch parties.<\/p>\n

Heat has already reshaped World Cup history. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was ultimately moved to the winter to avoid extreme summer temperatures.<\/p>\n
