Water in North Lauderdale has tested positive for E. coli, prompting the city to issue a boil water advisory for residents. <\/p>\n

The city says that one of 14 routine samples came back positive for E. coli bacteria on June 5. Repeat samples were collected the next day and were “reported absent for fecal coliform and E. coli.” But the lab said the samples had not been evaluated with the “approved analytical method,” so more sampling was done on June 8. <\/p>\n

On June 11, some samples came back positive for total coliform bacteria and at least one for E. coli. <\/p>\n

The city is working to determine the source of the contamination. <\/p>\n

Residents are encouraged to boil water for three minutes before drinking it until further notice. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food. <\/p>\n

What is E. coli?<\/h2>\n

E. coli is used to identify fecal contamination in freshwater, according to the <\/p>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, E. coli\u00a0<\/em>are bacteria found in many places like the intestines of people and animals. Most kinds of this bacteria\u00a0are harmless, but some can make you sick.<\/p>\n

People can get infected after swallowing E. coli, which could cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis, and other illnesses.<\/p>\n

The city says infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with severely compromised immune systems may be most at risk. <\/p>\n
