A Miami-Dade bus driver was arrested after a 6-year-old boy fell asleep while riding to school and was later found wandering alone, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Patricia Barberena, 62, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of child neglect with no great bodily harm, Miami-Dade jail records showed.<\/p>\n

According to an arrest report, Barberena had picked up the boy from day care and was on the way to drop him off at his school but he fell asleep and did not get off at his school.<\/p>\n

Barberena drove the bus to her home, parked in the swale and went into her house, the report said.<\/p>\n

A short time later, the boy woke up, got off the bus and started walking on Southwest 298th Terrace near Southwest 157th Avenue.<\/p>\n

He was found by a passerby who called the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n

Barberena wasn’t aware of the situation until she was contacted by the boy’s school telling her the boy hadn’t been dropped off, and she went outside to look for him, the report said.<\/p>\n

She was later interviewed by investigators and admitted she didn’t inspect the bus to see if there were any students still on the bus, the report said.<\/p>\n

“The defendant knowingly and willfully failed to provide her children with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the child’s physical and mental health that a prudent person would consider essential for the well being of a child,” the report said.<\/p>\n

Barberena was arrested and booked into jail. She was expected to appear in bond court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
