Florida’s attorney general said his office is prepared to target human trafficking during the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Miami.<\/p>\n

Attorney General James Uthmeier held a news conference in Miami on Tuesday to discuss his office’s efforts during the soccer tournament.<\/p>\n

“As we get ready for the World Cup, we’re gonna be down here in large numbers, we will be working hard with law enforcement,” Uthmeier said. “We will leave no stone unturned when it comes to rooting out evildoers, people who want to traffic and go after our women and kids, and we will prosecute and we will send them away for a long time.”<\/p>\n

Uthmeier said his office has partnered with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office on trafficking investigations but expects the World Cup to be a major human trafficking event.<\/p>\n

“We anticipate the World Cup will be the largest human trafficking location in world history, just the nature of the international presence, the money, the coastline, the entertainment, a lot of people from other countries where laws are different and they’re accustomed to some sick behaviors that might be legal or more permissive there,” he said.<\/p>\n

Uthmeier said his office has been involved in the arrest and conviction of more human traffickers in the past year than ever before in Florida.<\/p>\n

According to the attorney general, more than 1,600 human traffickers, child predators and exploitation-related offenders have been arrested since February 2025. Officials said human trafficking arrests and convictions have increased by more than 30% during that time.<\/p>\n

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Assistant Commissioner John Vecchio said law enforcement agencies across Florida are coordinating efforts ahead of the tournament.<\/p>\n

“While we welcome visitors to Florida to enjoy events like the FIFA World Cup, we need you to know: if you come to our home and take advantage of Floridians and our visitors, we will hold you accountable,” Vecchio said.<\/p>\n

Business leaders are also joining the effort. The Florida Chamber of Commerce announced plans to expand awareness campaigns and employee training throughout South Florida to help workers recognize potential warning signs of trafficking.<\/p>\n

Uber representatives said the company is distributing educational materials to drivers and riders ahead of the expected increase in travel. The company is also partnering with anti-trafficking organization It’s a Penalty to promote awareness during the World Cup. They say they will be integrating educational resources on the Uber app to help identify human trafficking.<\/p>\n

Advocates stressed that prevention remains a key part of the fight.<\/p>\n

“Human trafficking often hides in plain sight,” said Erin Collins, executive director of the Florida Alliance to End Human Trafficking. “Awareness saves lives.”<\/p>\n

During Tuesday’s event, survivor Gloria Martinez shared her story, telling attendees she was trafficked for more than five years as a teenager by someone she believed was her boyfriend.<\/p>\n

“I was trafficked as a minor by a minor,” Martinez said. “There is no reason for any of our children or women or men and boys to be quiet.”<\/p>\n

Officials are encouraging residents and visitors to remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas, and report suspected trafficking activity to authorities or the Florida human trafficking hotline.<\/p>\n

Uthmeier also had a warning for potential human traffickers at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

“So if you’re out there, if you’re watching, if you’re looking to get in some bad behavior this World Cup, I encourage you do not do that or you will most certainly pay for it,” he said.<\/p>\n
