An adult was hospitalized Sunday after a car plunged into a canal in Pembroke Pines, where bystanders rushed in to help rescue the occupant, authorities said.

Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue responded to a single-vehicle crash near Pavilion 17 at C.B. Smith Park, located at 900 N. Flamingo Road.

According to fire rescue officials, witnesses “immediately jumped into action,” pulling the adult occupant from the vehicle.

Authorities said the patient was transported to Memorial Hospital West in stable condition.

Pembroke Pines police also responded to the scene. Fire rescue officials said police divers helped confirm no other occupants were inside the vehicle.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
