At least three other deaths were linked to the storm, including another person who was killed when a tree fell onto a home in Alabama. Nearly 700,000 customers were without power by midday, and forecasters warned that flooding could stretch into the southern Appalachians.
It was news nobody wanted to receive right after a hurricane.
The Family of the woman who was killed told NBC6 that she was lying next to her husband when the tree fell on their house.
When first responders arrived, she didn’t have a pulse, and she was unconscious.
NBC6 spoke to the woman’s stepson about what led to this moment.
“My dad got smashed under the tree. She went very quickly,” he said. “My dad’s legs were crushed. He couldn’t get his phone or nothing, but he has an Apple Watch. He said he took like 20, 30 minutes to crawl himself out, and he texted me in the middle of the storm, and we lost power out in Perdita Key.”

When the stepson asked his father how bad it was, he said, “My wife is gone.”
The stepson told NBC6 that he spent the morning cutting down trees and crying, wondering how something like this could have happened.
“I’ve been dropping trees all morning, crying and carrying on,” he said. “And me, I’m just angry.”
