Dylan Hugh Long, 21, was arrested Tuesday on charges of video voyeurism and burglary, police said.
Police said Long placed a camera in his roommate’s nightstand and recorded videos of him without him knowing.
New body camera video released Thursday shows Long admitting to hiding the camera, but saying there had been ongoing problems between the two.
“The arguments have been going on for a year with his lack of communication on things I needed to know,” Long tells the detective.
He also told detectives his roommate had not been responding to his text messages, adding it was a drunken decision.
“We had gotten home from the bar at 2 in the morning, and chucked it in his dresser,” he says.

The victim said he noticed the camera after seeing a blinking blue light coming from his nightstand.
“(Long) said that he had planted the device inside to see if he was receiving his text messages because he had been ignoring him,” said South Miami Police Detective Jackie Del Sol.
The arrest report says the victim found about 49 video files on the device, and several of the files were corrupted.
NBC6 went by the house, but the victim did not want to comment on the matter.
Long is now facing a burglary and video voyeurism charge.
In court, his defense attorney said Long has no arrest history, has a government job lined up, and said it was an argument between roommates that “turned a little different.”
“Mr. Long maintains his innocence and looks forward to addressing these allegations through the appropriate legal process,” Matt Shafran, Long’s lawyer, said in a statement sent Thursday. “What occurred was not voyeuristic in nature, and we believe this situation has been significantly misunderstood.”
Long was ordered to stay away from the roommate and had his bond set at $3,500.
Online records show Long is a senior and a political science and economics student at UM.
