Authorities say a driver fleeing a traffic stop caused a deadly crash that also involved an unmarked Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) vehicle Wednesday night in northwest Miami-Dade.

MDSO said the crash happened near the intersection of Northwest 51st Terrace and Northwest 33rd Avenue, after deputies with the robbery intervention detail stopped a vehicle in the Brownsville neighborhood at about 7:42 p.m.

During the traffic stop, deputies confirmed that the driver had an outstanding warrant, but the person behind the wheel took off, officials said.

He was identified Thursday as 21-year-old Luis Manuel Perez.

More units responded as Perez entered a dead-end street, turned around and “ran a stop sign, colliding with a civilian vehicle [and] causing it to flip.”

The impact caused the cars to also hit an unmarked MDSO vehicle occupied by a deputy who was in the area searching for Perez, authorities said.

Surveillance video shared by community resident Ruddy Ocampo captured screeching tires and the violent crash. Rescue personnel said one person had to be extricated from a vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said the driver of the civilian vehicle was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but did not survive. Their name was not immediately provided.

The deputy was treated at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Perez was “taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation,” MDSO said.

According to an arrest report, Perez is now being held for the U.S. Armed Forces in reference to a military desertion charge. Authorities said “a records check… revealed the listed active fugitive warrant.” More details about the warrant were not immediately available.
