The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. after two dogs escaped a fenced-in yard and started roaming the neighborhood, Lighthouse Point Police officials said.

Police said the dogs eventually encountered a much smaller dog on the front porch of a home in the 2600 block of Northeast 52nd Street.

One of the loose dogs attacked the smaller dog, as the smaller dog’s owner and neighbors tried to separate them.

When they were unsuccessful, the owner retrieved a gun and shot the attacking dog, killing it, police said.

The dog later returned home where it was secured by the caretaker.

The injured resident was treated at the scene, while the small dog that was attacked was taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.

Police are investigating the incident and said that so far no criminal charges have been filed.
