Both teams have been mightily tested in the knockout stages. England survived vs. DR Congo with a 2-1 comeback win before outlasting Mexico 3-2 with 10 men in the Mexico City altitude. The Three Lions most recently came back to beat Norway 2-1 in extra time.
Cape Verde took Argentina to extra time, where Lionel Messi and Co. survived with a 3-2 win. The 3-2 score line continued vs. Egypt as Argentina needed to come back down 2-0 late in the game. La Albiceleste then took down 10-men Switzerland in extra time 3-1.

Key players to watch in England-Argentina World Cup semifinal
For England, the duo of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham will need to keep their goal streaks going. Both have six each this tournament, with Bellingham netting back-to-back braces. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are also battling fitness issues, and their statuses will be key to England’s chances of progressing. Jordan Pickford will be important between the sticks, especially on long-range shots.
Messi is the obvious heartbeat of La Albiceleste, logging eight goals and two assists so far. But he’ll need more consistent support in attack, which will need to come from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. Both scored in extra time vs. Switzerland, but an 11-man England side is a different test. Emi Martinez will also be tested and he’s allowed too many goals for Argentina’s liking. Giuliano Simeone may play a role if head coach Lionel Scaloni gives the young winger a shot.
