A 1-year-old boy was struck and killed by an SUV being driven by his mother in West Park, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. Monday at a home in the 100 block of Allen Road.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Ericka Cante Hernandez was driving a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban out of the driveway of the home when her son, Wilson Matias Jr. ran out of the home.
The 1-year-old was struck by the SUV and rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital where he died from his injuries.

A neighbor who lives nearby said she has often seen the family outside together, watching their children play.
“I’ve never seen them kids outside without a parent,” she said. “They just love they kids, they play with the water, they play with balloons. They’re just a family that really, really is family-oriented.”
Authorities said an investigation into the incident was ongoing but at this time detectives believe it was accidental.
