The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) said it responded at around 3:09 a.m. to Northeast 148th Street and Northeast 15th Avenue for a reported domestic battery with injuries. When deputies arrived, they found the victim unresponsive and suffering from stab wounds.

MDSO said the suspect, 18-year-old Juan Gonzalez, had locked himself inside a bathroom. After receiving commands from officers, he opened the door and was taken into custody.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue declared the victim dead at the scene. His name was not immediately provided.

According to an arrest report, Gonzalez’s stepfather “fell asleep while sitting on the dining room table” and shortly after, the suspect “produced multiple sharp objects, struck the victim multiple times and fatally wounded him.”

The victim’s wife told authorities that “sounds were heard in the family room” and said Gonzalez told her that he had left his stepfather unconscious.

The sheriff’s office said surveillance video captured Gonzalez adjusting the angle of cameras inside the home. When they searched the residence, investigators reportedly found a knife, a sword and an axe, all stained with blood.

Before being transported to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, Gonzalez invoked his right to remain silent.

He faces a first-degree murder charge and was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
